When watching films not in your language, do you prefer dubbing (voice over) or subtitles (readable text)?

Dubbing or subtitles? Empty Dubbing or subtitles?

I do like to watch foreign language films. Some people prefer one over the other. What do you prefer?

I much prefer subtitles so I can hear the film in the original language. Bad dubbing can be really off putting. For example, the Italian language film Life is Beautiful about an Italian Jew being sent to a Nazi concentration camp has the most hideous dubbing with stereotypical German and Italian accents that really belong on 1970s sitcoms.

I'm not sure which I prefer. I'd like to say subtitles because it's drives me nuts to see mouths not moving with the words. But a few days ago I tried to watch Inglorious Basterds and there's a large section in the middle where everyone is speaking German and they barely give enough time to read the subtitles - and I soon got lost. pale

I find it hard with subtitles because i tend to start watching those instead of the movie.

I've always been a fast reader (check out all of the book reviews I've posted) so I guess that explains my preference.

Not me. I'm a good reader and writer (shitty typist) but like to read slower.
